Habibul Haque Khondker

Dr. Habibul Haque Khondker, Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Zayed University, UAE. He completed his Ph.D. in Sociology from University of Pittsburgh, USA. He did his Masters in Sociology from Carleton University (Canada), and Bachelor and Masters from University of Dhaka.Before joining Zayed University as a Professor in 2006, he worked as an Associate Professor at National University of Singapore. During his study period, he has been awarded Andrew Mellon Pre-Doctoral Scholarship, Owen Fellowship and Ford Foundation Dissertation Scholarship.

Professor Habib worked as a Visiting Scholar at Cornell University, Columbia University and University of Pittsburgh. He was a Visiting Fellow of Institute of Social Studies at The Hague.
He has been acting as an External Examiner of several Doctoral dissertations in various Australian universities like The University of Sydney, Murdoch University and Macquarie University and as well as International Islamic University of Malaysia.

Professor Habib is affiliated with different professional organizations like International Sociological Association, International Sociological Committee, American Sociological Association and Global Development Network. Professor Habib is acting as a member of the Editorial Board of some prestigious journals like Globalizations, The Journal of Classical Sociology, Journal of Sociology, South Asian Journal of Social Sciences, Asia Matters: Business, Culture, and Theory, The Journal of Global Studies, etc. Simultaneously he served as a reviewer for international journals like American Journal of Sociology, International Sociology, Current Sociology, Asian Journal of Social Science, Globalization, British Journal of Sociology, International Journal of Sociology, etc.

To date Professor Habib published more than 60 journal articles in world prestigious journals like Asian Journal of Social Science, International Sociology, Globalizations, Contemporary Sociology, Society, International Sociology, Current Sociology, Journal of Bangladesh Studies, International Journal of Contemporary Sociology, International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, Commentary, British Journal of Sociology, Southeast Asian Journal of Social Science, Asian Journal of Political Science, Development and Society, Humboldt Journal of Social Relations, International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, The Journal of Social Studies, Development and Change, The Singapore Economic Review, Ethnic Studies Report, Urban Environment Management, Natural Hazards Observer, Asian Profile, South Asia, Regional Studies, Journal of Contemporary Asia, Journal of Bangladesh Studies, etc.

In addition to this, he published several books and book chapters from various international publications (Wiley-Blackwell, Rawat Publications, Patridge Publishers, Routledge, Springer, Macmillan, Sage Publication, Palgrave, World Scientific Press, Cambridge Scholar Press, The University Press Limited, Brill,Marcel Dekker, Kluwer Academic Publisher, Times Academic Press, Chopmen, etc.)

His research areas of interests in globalization and culture, women’s empowerment and democratization, migration, state and civil society and famine and politics.

Premakumara de Silva

Premakumara De Silva received his B.A. (Hones.) and M.A. in Sociology from the University of Colombo and MSc and PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh, UK. He has won several prestige international fellowships including British Academy, American Academy of Religion, Sir Radcliffe-Brown and Sir Remond Firth Fellowship of Royal Anthropological Institute in UK, Award of Commonwealth Countries of University of Edinburgh (Sir Ernest Cassel Award), and Wenner – Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in New York. He was the first Deputy Vice Chancellor, and former Head of Sociology Department and the Senior Student Counsellor of University of Colombo. Prof. de Silva was the president of Sociological Association of Sri Lanka (SASL) 2007-2009, and the Honorary Council member of Social Scientist Association of Sri Lanka (SSA). His research interests include political use of religion and ritual, nationalism, local democracy, youth culture, Indigenous study, violence and globalization. Prof. de Silva has won several international competitive research grants most recently Australian Research Council (ARC) grant for the collaborative research project title ‘Religious Innovation and Social Reform in Sri Lanka’ (2015-2017). He has published eight books, several book chapters and number of articles to his credit. Its include books on ‘Globalization and the Transformation of Planetary Rituals in Southern Sri Lanka (2000) Colombo: ICES Publication, ‘Second Tsunami’: Lost of co-existence among Tsunami Affected Communities in Southern Sri Lanka. Colombo: SSA publication (2009), His most recent article are, (2015) ‘Colonial Knowledge’ Productions on Sri Pada as ‘Adam’s Peak’  In South Asian Journal of Social Sciences (SAJSS) and (2016) “Anthropological Studies on South Asian Pilgrimage: Case of Buddhist Pilgrimage in Sri Lanka” In International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Vol.4. No.1. He is currently working on a monograph, titled ‘Beyond the Sacred Journey: Varieties of Pilgrimage at the Sri Pada Temple in Sri Lanka.
